Art Meets Technology
Having your bust modelled in clay and cast in hot metal is still a very expensive and laborious process. Thanks to a pioneering combination of modern and ancient techniques, which we have carefully developed, it is now possible to provide a very reliable and affordable way to acquire this most treasured and desired of tributes. The head is sculpted by our expert figurative sculptor, Jonathan Goslan. A digital 3d object is produced and you will approve it before we then go on to create the form in a 3d printer. The print is then cast directly in bronze which streamlines the whole process. The final stage of the whole artistic process is the hand finishing and patination.
The Conventional Approach
Traditionally a great expense and risk was undertaken to employ an artist who could sculpt a likeness in clay. After many hours of work and some tedious sittings you may (or may not!) have been happy with the outcome. This will have already cost thousands of pounds even before the next stage which is the casting of the clay surface to make a mould. A wax version is then required at an additional expense. Finally the wax is burned out of another mould which is then filled with the hot metal and the bronze is now ready for finishing and patination. The whole process can take months and many thousands of pounds.
You may not be entirely happy with the likeness of a clay sculpt as there are very few portrait artists in the world who can deliver an attractive 3d portrait. Adults, and especially children, can look a little 'cartoony' and the eyes are especially difficult to represent. It is a peculiar fact that there seem to be very many people who claim to be sculptors and are proudly displaying their portfolios of strange objects to the world. If you take a look around the internet at portrait sculptors, the variation in quality is really quite surprising. It seems that anyone can set themselves up and have a go as a professional sculptor!
When you are contemplating such an important purchase the least you can expect is some very high resolution images. At London Foundry we are proud to present our objects in glorious colour detail.
The lowest price for a figurative sculptor to produce a life-size bronze in the UK is about £6,000. A mid-range artist will set you back at least £10,000. The very finest sculptors are extremely expensive (starting at £20,000) and are they are usually unavailable for private commission since they will be concentrating on public figures.
In contrast, we can guarantee the accuracy of your likeness and at a very attractive price. With prices starting at £2,150 for a half-size bust and £4,950 for a life-size bust, it is incredibly good value. Our quality and level of finish is second to none. We also aim to deliver within two months of the start date.
This teenage boy has been polished beautifully which particular attention to the skin. When our artist, Jonathan, is satisfied that the face is flawless he applies a patina to tone down the brightness of the bronze. This mimics the natural aging process of the metal. Finally, a dark wax is applied which brings out the richness of the colour and also helps to define the features. The bronze can now be left for several years before a new coat of wax should be applied.
